The Information Technology Department was started in 2004 as a support department which offered ICT technical services to the then Kitale Technical Training Institute. Alongside this, the department offered computer applications packages as a short course. Later, the department was split into two sections: The IT Section which offered academic programs and the ICT Section which continued to offer ICT technical services to the institute.
The first batch of students were admitted into a six month certificate course in computer systems application packages (CSAP) in 2005. Afterwards, other certificate and diploma programs were started including the Diploma in Computer Studies and Diploma in Information and Communication Technology.
Since then, the department has grown from below 20 students to currently over 250 students. Likewise, the number of staff members has grown from below 5 to over 25 highly qualified and dedicated trainers, technicians and support staff. The department also offers industrial attachment and internship programs to trainees and graduates respectively from other institutions of higher learning.
Currently the department offers the following KNEC courses on both regular and part-time basis:
Diploma in computer studies (3 years)
Diploma in Information Communication Technology (3 years)
Certificate in Information Communication Technology (2 years)
Alongside these courses the department also offers the following professional and short courses.
The Cisco Certified Networking Associate(CCNA/CISCO) (4 months)
The International Computer Driving License (ICDL). (2 months)
Certified Information Communication Technologists (KASNEB)(2 years)
Computer Application Packages (Short Course) 1 month
Following the government’s initiative in TVET institutions to introduce Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) programmes, the department is in the process of developing several CBET programmes.
These include:
A Diploma course in Computer Hardware and Maintenance,
A Diploma Course in Computer Networking and
A Diploma course in Software Engineering.
The department has 7 computer labs which are equipped with over 200 modern computers distributed across the 7 computer labs. More labs are currently being put up to cater for the ever increasing student population, especially now that there is a new initiative by government to heavily subsidize the Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Kenya.
The department prides itself in its quality graduates, who not only get absorbed into the market with ease, but also have scaled the heights of entrepreneurship in the region.
We admit students into the department for the various courses during the months of September (All programs), January (All programs) and May (Short Courses, Professional Courses and Continuing Programs). All these programs are offered on both full-time and part-time basis, except for the short courses and the professional courses which are currently being offered on full-time basis. However, there may be special arrangements for interested applicants with limited time.
We urge all qualified and interested candidates to enroll with us for quality training.
Thank you.
